Louis XIV accepts for his grandson the throne of Spain, and jealous Europe unites itself against France.
The war takes place on five principal theatres: Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and sea.
After three years of undecided fight (1701-1704), France, overpowered by the number, is overcome in Germany with Hochsted (1704), in the Netherlands with Ramillies, in Italy in Turin (1706); a French squadron is destroyed in Malaga; the grandson of Louis XIV, Philippe V, is driven out of Madrid by the archduke of Austria.
France is raised in 1707: Vendôme stops the invasion in North, Villars covers Alsace, the Imperial ones fail in Provence, Philippe V returns to Madrid, and the chief of Forbin squadron makes an immense evil with the English and Dutch trade.
